Brixton Prison
HMP Brixton is a category B local prison, accommodating adult male prisoners aged 21 and over. In April 2004 the commissioning responsibility for healthcare services at HMP Brixton was transferred to Lambeth Primary Care Trust. This transfer was part of a national initiative aimed at raising the quality of prison healthcare in line with wider NHS provision.
HMP Brixton’s primary role is to serve allocated courts, holding remand and trial prisoners committed to these courts. Convicted prisoners have an initial interview and are then categorised and allocated to another prison with facilities appropriate to their sentence and needs. Where possible we will retain people from local boroughs serving short sentences, or at the end of long sentences, to assist with their resettlement.
Currently, medical services in HMP Brixton are provided by a number of providers.
SELDOC is providing Out of Hours Medical cover to Brixton Prison. This service commenced from 10th July 2007.
